Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli and Irfan Pathan

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan, who has played a lot of cricket with both Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir for the national team, had words of appreciation for Gambhir. Pathan said those words of praise after what transpired last night between the RCB batter and the KKR mentor as both were seen doing exactly the opposite of what all of us had expected. The Delhi-based duo squashed their beef in front of a packed crowd at the M. Chinnaswamy stadium.

While speaking to Star Sports after the Kolkata Knight Riders registered their 2nd consecutive victory in IPL 2024, Irfan Pathan showered a lot of support to Gautam Gambhir. The all-rounder said that in the context of Gambhir, being the senior guy, going forward and paving the way to make things normal between him and Virat Kohli, who reciprocated his senior’s gesture.

During the strategic timeout of the 1st innings when RCB was batting, Gautam Gambhir had entered the field to speak with his bowlers on how to prevent the flow of runs. Before he went on to discuss, the 2011 World Cup winner was first seen shaking hands with Kohli, then gave a side hug, and a few pats on the back. The duo were also seen exchanging a few words with a huge smile evident on their faces.

Irfan Pathan says Gautam Gambhir was right to put the bad in the past

Irfan Pathan, who was present at the Hindi commentary box when this incident unfolded, later claimed that Gautam Gambhir was right to put the bad in the past. Pathan appreciated the way Gambhir approached Virat Kohli and liked the way both of them greeted each other following the ugly spat that took place last season during RCB Vs LSG’s reverse fixture at Ekana.

“Gautam Gambhir, the senior guy, actually came forward. Sometimes you cross the line but as soon as that thing has gone past, when you meet in the future, when you meet now, you meet nicely. This is what we saw.” – Pathan said via Star Sports.

It was not just Irfan Pathan who expressed his view, but the likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri, and Ian Bishop among others also had things to say on the matter. This particular topic of Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli giving side hugs has become so trendy that even Delhi Police took to X (formerly Twitter) and created an safety post in that context.

But it should also be noted that in sports, nothing is permanent and situations can change over time. Like none of us had expected the ugly spat between Kohli and Gambhir last season, none of us expected them to squash their indifferences last night. So who knows what will happen when the duo meet each other in the reverse fixture which will take place at the Eden Gardens.

KKR aiming to complete a hat-trick of wins against Delhi Capitals up next

Meanwhile, after becoming the 3rd team after Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals to have maintained a 100% win record, KKR will aim to complete a hat-trick of wins against Delhi Capitals up next. The away fixture will take place at the ACA-VDCA stadium on the 3rd of April in Vishakhapatnam.
